Understanding Pan-Africanism: Cultivating a Vision Without Borders

As part of the training program organized by Africa Without Borders, AKEM researcher and pan-Africanist Mr. Moussa Hissein Moussa presented an in-depth analysis of the history, ideological foundations and historical trajectories of pan-Africanism. During his presentation, he showed how the intellectual heritage forged by thinkers of the African diaspora in the Americas — since the Haitian Revolution — played a determining role in the emergence of Pan-Africanism. He also underlined that this intellectual continuity gradually transformed into a political and intellectual movement extending to the African continent. Mr. Moussa explained in detail how figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey laid the first ideological milestones of a movement that nourished African independence struggles and laid the foundations of lasting continental solidarity. Pan-Africanist circles that emerged in Europe, political solidarity networks and diaspora organizations were also examined in their historical context. The presentation highlighted the fact that Pan-Africanism is not only a political ideology, but a vast project of transformation with multiple dimensions — educational, economic, cultural, social and even musical. From this perspective, the unitary vision of Kwame Nkrumah, the role of Miriam Makeba in cultural resistance and in the international representation of African identity, as well as the contributions of other great pan-Africanist figures were addressed through concrete examples.
