Religion, Culture and Politics in Africa: A Multidimensional Analysis

As part of the training program, a conference was devoted to the analysis of the relationships between religion, culture and politics in Africa, adopting a resolutely multidimensional perspective. The presentation was presented by Mr. Djaranabi Djaranabi Djibrine Al Djazouli, student in political science and international relations, who illustrated, using concrete examples, the way in which African social structures influence the configuration and functioning of the continent's political systems. Mr. Djibrine Al Djazouli stressed that, in many African countries, the political sphere and the religious sphere are not strictly separated; on the contrary, they are intimately intertwined. Religion, far from being limited to individual life, shapes governance, the formulation of public policies as well as the mechanisms of social cohesion. The speaker also noted that, in some regions, religious authorities exercise significant influence over decision-making processes, while religious identity can play a determining role in elections. The conference also highlighted the direct impact of the continent's remarkable cultural and ethnic diversity on political structures. In many countries, the historical ties of ethnic groups can play a decisive role in the formation of ruling elites. It was explained that some leaders assign strategic positions to members of their own community or ethnic group, thus participating in the reconfiguration of balances of power. Such a dynamic can strengthen social solidarity, but it can also give rise to rivalries and tensions.
