Analysis of the Article by Mo Ibrahim (2022) Africa’s Past Is Not Its Future — How the Continent Can Chart Its Own Course

As part of the training program organized by Africa Without Borders, political scientist and researcher Ms. Sirad Jacfer Mohamed presented an in-depth analysis of Mo Ibrahim's article entitled “Africa’s Past Is Not Its Future — How the Continent Can Chart Its Own Course”. During the presentation, it was emphasized that Mo Ibrahim rejects the idea that the future of the African continent is irremediably determined by the traumatic legacy of colonialism and slavery. Although these historical factors have undoubtedly shaped some current socio-political challenges, the author argues that the continent's most defining problems today relate to internal dynamics, such as poor governance, corruption, lack of responsible leadership and institutional fragility. According to Ibrahim, Africa's development depends above all on the decisions made by its own leaders and institutions; therefore, “the era when Africa entrusted its destiny to external forces must come to an end.” In her analysis, Ms. Sirad highlighted three fundamental axes developed in the article: The crisis of governance : For Mo Ibrahim, the main obstacle to the development of African countries is no longer the colonial past, but a persistent weakness in state capacity, a lack of transparency and democratic deficits which still hamper the contemporary political trajectory. The importance of building strong institutions : The author insists that no sustainable development is possible without a political structure based on robust institutions rather than personalized leadership. Institutional consolidation constitutes, according to him, the basis of real and lasting progress.
